Cotswolds visitors can look forward to the Newent Onion Fayre, featuring farmer and BBC presenter Adam Henson.
COTSWOLDS, ENGLAND, August 11, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Newent Onion Fayre returns to the Cotswolds next month, with BBC presenter Adam Henson appearing as a special guest.
Attracting nearly 15,000 visitors to the Gloucestershire market town each year, the fair's history can be traced back to the late 13th century when Welsh drovers would purchase onions as they travelled through.
Although the Onion Fayre declined in the early part of the 20th century, it was revived in 1996 as a one-day festival and is now one of the region's most popular annual events.
Cotswold hotel guests visiting the fair on Saturday September 11th can expect an energetic celebration of local food and drink, with more than 100 stands, live music, children's activities and other entertainment.
One of the traditional highlights of the day is the onion eating competition, in which contestants must chew their way through a 7 oz onion in the quickest possible time.
Local sheep farmer Henson, who visitors may know as one of the presenters on the BBC's countryfile, will open the Onion Fayre and take part in many of the activities.
Admission to the event is free and there is plenty more to keep people entertained, including live music from local singer Laura Price and the Roving Crows.
